Geospatial Mapping of Coastal Communities of Alabama (September 2009 – August 2011)
The goal of the project was to help communities develop a disaster resilient Alabama coastal economy by the use of geospatial mapping technologies.
The team mapped nearly 12,000 infrastructure points in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Bayou La Batre, and Dauphin Island. Auburn students and faculty worked with local leaders to complete tasks unique to each community.
The project team at Auburn University in partnership with various city and private stakeholders in the coastal communities is working on development of procedures and methodologies for effective recovery of the coastal communities in the event of a disaster.

Hurricane Disaster Preparation and Disaster Recovery Study (Spring 2008)
In January 2008, Diane Brown and Steve Henderson, representatives of the City of Gulf Shores, Alabama, requested that students from the Auburn University assist them in the research and field work for a project focusing on hurricane preparation and disaster recovery.
The project goal was to develop and infrastructure for collecting, compiling, and maintaining data for the use in hurricane recovery efforts. In the event of a hurricane hitting a city on the Gulf Coast, severe property damage can occur due to storm surges, high wind speeds, and flying debris.
However, due to large amounts of sand piling onto roadways, additional damage can occur during clean-up efforts as it is impossible for a crew to see a utility fixture such as a fire hydrant. Students collected GPS data for the above ground utility fixtures in order to prevent further damage from being done to the utilities.A pilot test area of around 1.5 miles in Gulf Shores was chosen for data collection.

Geospatial Mapping of Jordan Hare Stadium at Auburn University (September 2010-2011)
The goal of this project was to create a geographically referenced visual representation for Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama in order to aid emergency management personnel in decision making, focused on critical infrastructure relevant to emergency preparation and response.
Campuses are essentially open environments and are vulnerable to disasters.
This project tries to answer some of the challenges faced by the first responders in dealing with emergencies in mitigating the impact of the disaster by using geospatial technologies.
